I've seen this badge around for a while on various blogs and websites and I have always known what the concept was, but I finally decided to do a bit more research and see if it was for me. If you take a look at the source code for your blog, you'll probably see several references of the rel='nofollow' tag. This was originally created to prevent search engines from indexing links left by commenters in order to reduce spam. However, it doesn't seem to work, even as a deterrent, spam still exists. This nofollow tag seems to only penalize legitimate commenters by not allowing the links left in comments of posts to be indexed. I took the step to get into my code and remove the tags. It's easy to do and will benefit everyone who leaves a comment and/or links on sites that do choose to "Follow". This message is one way to let readers know that their comments are appreciated and immediately rewarded with, at the very least, a little boost to their google page rank!
