U Comment, I Follow

U Comment I Follow I've seen this badge around for a while on various blogs and websites and I have always known what the concept was, but I finally decided to do a bit more research and see if it was for me. If you take a look at the source code for your blog, you'll probably see several references of the rel='nofollow' tag. This was originally created to prevent search engines from indexing links left by commenters in order to reduce spam. However, it doesn't seem to work, even as a deterrent, spam still exists. This nofollow tag seems to only penalize legitimate commenters by not allowing the links left in comments of posts to be indexed. I took the step to get into my code and remove the tags. It's easy to do and will benefit everyone who leaves a comment and/or links on sites that do choose to "Follow". This message is one way to let readers know that their comments are appreciated and immediately rewarded with, at the very least, a little boost to their google page rank!

  6. You are no longer able to save Page Rank by using the nofollow tag anyway. Google took that ability away. So you may as well let every link that isn't a paid link be dofollow.
    ReplyDelete
  7. Good point, thank you for mentioning that! You use to could save page rank for certain links so it wasn't divided among so many and get more "juice" for a smaller # of links, now Google just throws the leftovers away so you may as well remove the nofollow tags.
    ReplyDelete
  8. I still don't get it what you guys talking about save page rank.
    ReplyDelete
  9. I think the point was that before if you had 10 outgoing links on your site google would share between those 10..they would get 1/10 of whatever google was using in it's ranking formula. If there were 5 they would get 1/5, so twice as much "juice" for each link in the euation...so you could "save page rank" by having some of the links nofollow and give more ranking juice to the others. Now it's something like if you have 10 they each get a certain amount..if you have 5 they still get the same amount each instead of dividing it out so by removing the no-follow tags your helping each person who leaves a link and not penalizing anyone by having to divide among more people...so if the links don't follow it's kind of just throwing away the rank boost those links would be getting. Maybe republican blog could fill in all the technical details, but I think that's the basic idea??

  13. Thanks for the explaination. I do understand of course, but it leaves me wondering about all the times we've gone out of our way, abusing our rig etc. to take people when it's really not important to them, when it comes right down to it. Our reasons for not wanting to participate get scrutinized, people think we're silly for not wanting to eat out or go to the movies etc. it's all in perspective. In the end I suppose part the reason we go to the blue lakes, the cainevilles etc. is to get away from the norm and the crowds and get a little more than most choose to experience or choose to risk or make the effort so, it's all good.:)

  14. some time i think that if every blog owner and site owner make his/her site/blog nofollow then back linking and comments are not possible. it's true that for stoping or decreasing the spamming nofollow attribute used by blog/site owner, but there are any other option to stop such type of activities like anti-spamming software, moderation, mannual checking etc. well i feel good to read your post.
    ReplyDelete
  15. The nofollow craze was started because of spam. But we now have spam guards, so i don't understand why some people still use it.

  20. I think Google was wrong to introduce the whole 'no follow' thing in the first place, it was supposed to be a vote of no confidence and then they messed it up and tried to incorporate it into their algo. I'm not so sure why bloggers seem to have taken it on board to lock up their sites when all it takes is a modicum of moderating to run a decent blog.

Nice to see you're poking one in the eye of Google :)

    regards...

  31. Hi,

I would agree that rel="nofollow" didnt achieve its objective to reduce the SPAM but it did not meet the expected SPAM control target. Yet, it played some role to reduce the spam comment and link building strategies. However, giving appropriate credit to your readers is good enough. Comment spam is no more a problematic job now since a lots of plugin and tools are available which help you to tackle comment spam.

  60. Switching up comments and making them dofollow is definitely a great way to give back to your readers and encourage them to leave free relevant content on your blog. Basically, blog owners are given regularly updated quality content without having to lift a finger!

With that said, it's still important to look out for automated comment posting that really doesn't add a whole lot to the conversation as it literally is spam. You know, the simple one liners that could fit into just about any context.

  86. I think it is a good idea for sites to keep the comments dofollow. You just need to moderate the comments. The No Follow tag certainly did not end spam however if someone is spamming your system/blog and they are leaving useful relevant comments then you should start by banning their IP address.

  102. It's always nice to see bloggers who encourage the removal of the NoFollow attribute. The original purpose of it was understandable but it hasn't really had much effect, and its high time site started removing it altogether. It just does nothing but discourage participation from the readers/visitors.
    ReplyDelete
  103. I would like your presentation in this post. Really it's a very informative blog that is helpful for readers.

  104. Very nicely done indeed.I think listening to your members is key and ACTING on the info they share/provide is also important. Taking their feedback, knowledge etc and doing something with that information..whether that means promoting it so other members can benefit or making changes to how the community is run, features it includes, etc. Certainly you should communicate how you are acting on the info your members provide.Don't forget that another way to build online community is to leave your own community from time to time and visit others.

  107. Very useful, but I wonder what the purpose is of a long list of links without any real text. Looking for words like kratom powder. Would that really work. Better post somewhere in the right context, as in a page that has some info on a kratom source or best place to buy kratom online. Thank you :)

  117. unfortunately Google uses an algorithm that is segmenting a page into sections such as footer, header, navigation or comments. it is most likely that they will disregard the link juice from such URLs in comment sections and will pass value only for links inside the body content.

Ching ya I love your blog and i’m just discovering commentluv, cool!

  124. I love the concept. If the web is truly going to be a community, we have to find a way to deal with "no follow" and this is a good first step.
    ReplyDelete
  125. So true, you can get great comments even out of people doing SEO spam if you just let them put a some anchor text in there or let them put down their website.
    ReplyDelete
  126. The rel="nofollow" definately didn't have the desired effect of reducing spam. There are many reports (true or false i guess only google knows), that even nofollow links play some part in google rankings. I say if the comment is relevent or adds value, and someone has taken the time to read the post, then they deserve a dofollow link.
    ReplyDelete
  127. That's really cool. Thanks for sharing post with us. I will definitely try this at home.

  129. I think the "nofollow" tag is a total pain in the a$$. Google created an unnecessary monster when the dreamed this up. Now, they've got people scrambling around trying to find "Do follow" blogs. What a waste of time and energy they've sucked from society.

  143. It's a brilliant Idea. Blog comments benefit both parties with this exchange. It's nice to see that you've joined the revolution!

Leaking link juice should be a worry from the past now. Google's algorithm has advanced far past this now, as they have introduced their branding SERPS, local Search, product search and News tickers etc.

For what may (or may not ;) ) be link juice lost, it's definitely worth the added sense of community on a website.

Howdy I am so glad I found your website, I really found you by mistake, while I was researching on Aol for something else, Regardless I am here now and would just like to say kudos for a marvelous post and a all round thrilling blog (I also love the theme/design), I don’t have time to read it all at the minute but I have bookmarked it and also added in your RSS feeds, so when I have time I will be back to read much more, Please do keep up the superb job.
